These Terms of Use govern your use of the Free Rider Problem mobile application. By downloading, installing, or using the app, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the app.
THE APP
Free Rider Problem is an iOS app that calculates fuel and electricity costs for trips and divides them between riders. It is free with no in-app purchases.
ELIGIBILITY
You must be at least 13 years old to use Free Rider Problem. By using the app, you represent that you meet this age requirement.
YOUR ACCOUNT
Free Rider Problem uses invite codes instead of traditional accounts. You are responsible for keeping your invite code secure. Anyone with your invite code can connect to your account as a friend. We are not responsible for unauthorized access from shared invite codes.
ACCEPTABLE USE
You agree to use Free Rider Problem only for its intended purpose: calculating and splitting trip costs between friends. You agree not to:
- Use the app for any unlawful purpose
- Attempt to reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the app
- Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the app's backend systems
- Use automated scripts or bots to interact with the app
- Impersonate another person or create misleading accounts
- Interfere with the normal operation of the app or its infrastructure
COST CALCULATIONS
Free Rider Problem provides estimates of trip costs based on the information you provide (vehicle efficiency, fuel/electricity price, and distance). These calculations are approximations and should not be relied upon as exact figures. Actual fuel consumption varies based on driving conditions, weather, traffic, vehicle condition, and other factors.
The app does not guarantee the accuracy of distance calculations provided by Apple Maps (MKDirections). Actual driving distances may differ from calculated routes.
Free Rider Problem is not a financial service. The app does not process payments, transfer money, or provide financial advice. It is a calculator and record-keeping tool. All actual payments between users happen outside the app through whatever method the users choose.
YOUR DATA
You own the data you enter into Free Rider Problem (trip records, vehicle information, route data). By using the app, you grant us a limited license to store and sync this data through our backend service (Convex) for the purpose of providing the app's functionality.

THIRD-PARTY SERVICES
Free Rider Problem relies on the following third-party services:
- Apple MKDirections — for calculating driving distances between locations
- Convex — for real-time data storage and synchronization
These services are subject to their own terms and privacy policies. We are not responsible for the availability, accuracy, or practices of third-party services.
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
The Free Rider Problem app, including its design, code, graphics, sounds, and content, is protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws. You may not copy, modify, distribute, or create derivative works based on the app without prior written permission.
The 1980s arcade aesthetic, pixel art, sound effects, and visual design are original works. "Free Rider Problem" is an unregistered trademark.
DISCLAIMER OF WARRANTIES
Free Rider Problem is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement.
We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of harmful components. We do not warrant the accuracy of cost calculations, distance measurements, or balance records.
LIMITATION OF LIABILITY
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, in no event shall the developers of Free Rider Problem be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of or related to your use of the app, including but not limited to:
- Inaccurate cost calculations or distance estimates
- Disputes between users over trip costs or balances
- Loss of data or inability to access the app
- Actions taken based on information provided by the app
TERMINATION
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your access to the app at any time, for any reason, without notice. You may stop using the app at any time. To request deletion of your data, contact us at support@freeriderproblem.com.
CHANGES TO THESE TERMS
We may update these Terms of Use from time to time. Changes will be reflected on this page with an updated effective date. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
GOVERNING LAW
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Quebec, Canada, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any disputes arising from these terms shall be resolved in the courts of Quebec.
APPLE'S STANDARD EULA
Use of Free Rider Problem is also subject to Apple's Standard End User License Agreement (EULA) for apps downloaded through the App Store.
